A New Direction

I will be the first to admit that I had a real distaste for electronic/new age/ambient music. I always thought of it as being simple and a kind of a jazz for people who didn’t want to think. Kind of like the pop of jazz if you see what I mean. But after seeing my fair share of one and two man bands using electronics to mix whole bands and listened to a fair bit of it too, I must say that it is definetly a possibility. It has opened up my ears to new sounds, and has given me lots of ideas (which consequently end up being un-translatable). I have lately been toying with the idea of trying my hand at some electronic mixing. I have a lot of reading to do though because I’m not even sure where to begin….drum machines…or are there entire programs already built for this purpose? Or is it all cut and paste type of thing? If nothing else it would be good to practice with, cause it sure beats the hell out of band-in-a-box. One of the new bands I have been listening to a lot is cafe del mare. You can check out my post on the Soundtrack at the top of the page. For future reference, all explicitly/technically music posts, always containing samplers, can be found there. This band among others has really made me want to start my own stuff in this category. I think bar gigs with this kind of music would be great, cause it’s reachable for everyone. Granted as it is it’s probably not the best stage material, but with minimal editing it could be. This new direction shows promise.

In other news, I saw Brokeback Mountain tonight. It was most definetly the best movie I have seen in a long long time. The acting was phenomenal, definetly not a given, even a rarity, in hollywood lately. And it was not overdone, ok maybe a little bit in one place but it is still hollywood, as it could have been. All considered I found it a provoking, moving story that was well told. Although the “gore” could have been a little less.

What would I, or anyone for that matter, be without art?
