Expectations
According to the first truth of Buddhism life is suffering, or Dukkha (a lack of fulfillment). We cause suffering because we always expect things. We know what we want and expect to get it. For example: I am writing a paper, and accidentaly delete the entire thing. Why am I angry? Why do I suffer? Because I expected to be finished of it, and am not.
My question is how? In modern life where there are so many demands on our time, minds and efforts how do we expect nothing? How should I react to my paper being deleted? With joy? Perhaps without any emotion. Or should I act logically and explain what happened to my prof? Only to have him say, “be more careful next time”, and give me zero on the assignement.
I didn’t actually do this, it’s completely theoretical. It’s just a thought. There have been many instances, though, where I have wondered how to react to a situation which would normally incur suffering. I guess the question is really: How can I expect nothing when things are being expected of me?
Have a peaceful day,
Nick
