WDR blew my brain to peices!!!!

Oh man. What a concert. It’s always the unexpected that really knocks your socks off. So my host mother - Krista - told me last Saturday that we were going to Vienna on Sunday and then coming back Monday. Apparently she told me before but I think I just dismissed it becauseI thought I had school today (monday) meaning I would not be able to go. However, I found out last thursday that I do not, in fact, have school on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. So here I am sitting in an internet cafe (Bignet, really cool…HUGE) waiting for a couple exchange student friends to get to Vienna so we can grab a coffee and go to another!!! jazz show tonight. I decided to stay another night in Vienna because…well…why the hell not!? So I looked on the internet this morning what concerts are on tonight…and there is a Sextet that looks really good from the States playing at Porgy and Bess a reknowned jazz club here in Vienna. More on that in a minute.

Anyway back to my reason for this post. My host mother told me that we would not really be doing anything Sunday evening in Vienna, so I went and looked up what was going on (concert wise of course) Sunday evening. It turned out there was a concert at Birdland a really really cool jazz club here in the Viennese Hilton. It was Joe Zawinul and the WDR Big Band. Holy crap…Joe Zawinul was cool, but that big band blew my mind. They were absolutely un-freakin’believable. I will post pictures and a video (if I can figure out how to) when I get home. Check out their site. I have decided I have to see them again before the year is out…they were just ridiculous. Five trumpet players, and I even liked the lead trumpet players playing. He actually had a nice tone and sounded good, even in the low register. And the second trumpet player ripped the shit out of every song. Man he could play. Crazy… I LOVE VIENNA!!!

Tonight I am going to see Dave Douglas and the keystone sextet at Porgy and Bess Jazz Club. I dunno what it’s gonna be like…it could be…different. But it should be cool anyway.

I’m running out of time so I better hit it.
